Nichole volunteered in a community hospital and children’s clinic in Cusco, Peru as part of a language study program with AmeriSpan. While working as a nurse’s assistant, Nichole experienced a high-pressure cross-cultural work environment, and was able to greatly enhance her Spanish language skills by using them in a professional context.

While working as a professional massage therapist in the US, Uma has taken a number of short-term insight volunteer trips to, among other places, Guatemala and Peru. On every trip, she tries to immerse herself fully in her host culture, and to really understand the local way of life.

Lindsey spent a month volunteering in Belize. Not only was she able to get a sense of educational culture in the country, but she also saw the domestic sde of Belizean culture by choosing to live with a host family during her stay.

Non-profit organization United Planet is hosting a photo and video contest. Submissions are due by August 21st, so if you're just heading abroad for your summer adventure, keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready!

According to the guidelines, all entries "should aim to illustrate the ideas of cross-cultural understanding, friendship and supporting one another" at home or abroad.
